The Collaborative Commons serves as a space for individual and group learning, researching, interacting and engaging in collaborative work, and use of computers, and a printer/scanner/copier.
The Library houses the Physical Collection of carefully selected materials from small presses and mainstream publications in support of the innovative academic programs offered at Maryland University of Integrative Health.
Library Services includes circulation, reference, and research assistance from Library staff members.

Physical Collection & Library Services

NOTE: When the University is closed due to emergency and weather-related events, the Information Commons and Library services are also closed. School closure notices will be posted on MUIH’s home page. Additional closures or adjustments to Library hours may occur around holiday times and during trimester breaks. All current students, faculty, and staff who have been given an muih.edu email accounts are granted borrowing privileges. Community members and alumni are required to provide credit card information and a viable email address in order to borrow library materials. The library does not support remote borrowing of physical materials. Patrons may borrow materials in person at the library.
Our regular collection loan period is four weeks for all active patrons. To support academics and our University’s growth, the maximum items a student, faculty, or board member can borrow is 15 items. For staff, community members, and alumni, their maximum number of checkouts is three items.
Computer Access & Use
Library computers are available for use by patrons and visitors. Time periods of use may be limited if individuals are engaging in work that is not school-related.
Overdue Notifications, Fines, and Graduation Holds
Prior to due dates for checked out items, borrowers will be sent courtesy email reminders stating that the items are due shortly. Once an item is overdue, a patron will receive three overdue notices via email. Fines will start accruing the day after an item is due at a rate of 20 cents per item per day. After the second overdue notification the fines will to increase to 50 cents per item per day until the item(s) is returned. If no action is taken, a fourth and final notice will be sent with an itemized invoice of the item(s) not returned to the library. The patron is responsible for paying the full cost of the item, including taxes and fees, and fines accrued at that time. The patron’s borrowing privileges will be revoked until the item is returned or replacement cost is paid in full. Students with outstanding fines and bills may be held back from graduation.
Current Awareness Alerts
Current awareness alerts from PubMed Customized by Sherman Cohn Library are available through our RSS feeds. Feeds are available on the topics of stress reduction, health literacy, and mind-body medicine.
Articles can be ordered for students for a $12 dollar per article fee. The library can also fulfill document requests from faculty. The library is not equipped to provide document delivery service to alumni and members of the public.
Electronic Resources & Remote Access to Materials
Electronic resources can be accessed on site by all patrons. Remote access to by-subscription-only electronic resources is restricted to students, faculty, or staff with a current affiliation to MUIH. Log in to My MUIH to access library resources remotely.

General Library Assistance
Library desk staff are available to help all patrons use the library. They assist patrons with using computers and other library equipment. Simple reference questions can be answered at this point of service. Complex questions from students or faculty may require advance preparation the part of staff and are handled during individually-scheduled appointments.
Patrons may log in to their accounts within the catalog and place up to five checked out items on hold. When a requested item is checked back in, the requestor will receive an email notification and a phone call from the Library Assistant on duty. It is the responsibility of the patron to be mindful of his or her maximum of checkouts available. If the patron exceeds their maximum amount, s/he must first return an item(s) before picking up a requested item.
Librarians can be embedded in online courses or hired as guest lecturers. Faculty may reach the library to inquire about embedded and instructional librarian services.

Patrons in need of materials that the library does not hold are advised to reach their local public library to make use of inter-library loan service. To locate a local public library, use the LibWeb Directory.

On Site Collections
Anyone is welcome to use the library’s regular, reference, reserve, periodicals, and special collection materials within the library. All patrons may borrow material from the regular and sequestered collections. The reserve section houses the core academic collection which can only be borrowed by students, faculty, and staff.
Photocopying, Scanning, & Printing
It costs five cents per page to copy or print at the library. All patrons are welcome to use the photocopier/scanner/printer.
Research, Search, & Citation Appointments
Library staffers are available to meet with students and faculty who need assistance with formulating searches, conducting research, or using proper APA referencing and citation format. Complex questions are handled during individually-scheduled appointments. Contact us at to schedule an appointment.
Items that are on hold for another patron are not eligible for renewal. Patrons may renew eligible items autonomously using their online catalog accounts, or they may call the library to request renewals. Items from the regular collection can be renewed one week before the due date. For the reserve and sequestered collection, the patron can renew three days before the due date. After the second renewal, the item(s) must be returned to the library.
Space to Rest or Meditate
The library, and all of MUIH, is a special place, offering resources or programs that are compelling and uncommon. The library acknowledges that individuals may commute long distances to experience what MUIH and the library have to offer and permits napping or meditating in our regular stacks area. Blankets and pillows are available. Those engaged in meditation or napping do so with the understanding that they may be disturbed if patrons require books that are shelved in the section where they have decided to rest, and that the library maintains a information commons atmosphere where talking and collaborative work are acceptable.
