Disabilities Services Policy – Students
MUIH is committed to ensuring equal access for qualified individuals with disabilities and fully complies with all relevant federal and state laws. At MUIH, no qualified individual with a disability is excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination in access to services, benefits, and extracurricular activities at the University solely by reason of their disability.
A “qualified individual with a disability” is a person with a disability who has been certified by a professional qualified to evaluate the disability in question; meets the essential eligibility requirements for participation in or receipt of a program or activity; and is capable with accommodations as necessary to ensure that such requirements do not discriminate or have the effect of discriminating, on the basis of their disability, against a qualified prospective or matriculated student.
Any person who believes they have been subjected to discrimination on the basis of disability may file a grievance under this procedure. It is against the law for MUIH to retaliate against anyone who files a grievance or cooperates in the investigation of a grievance.
Grievances must be submitted to the Associate Vice President of Student and Alumni Affairs within 15 calendar days of the date the person filing the grievance becomes aware of the alleged discriminatory action. A complaint must be in writing, containing the name and address of the person filing it. The complaint must state the problem or action alleged to be discriminatory and the remedy or relief sought.
The Associate Vice President of Student and Alumni Affairs (or their designee) shall conduct an investigation of the complaint. This investigation may be informal, but it must be thorough, affording all interested persons an opportunity to submit evidence relevant to the complaint. The Associate Vice President of Student and Alumni Affairs will maintain the files and records of MUIH relating to such grievances.
The Associate Vice President of Student and Alumni Affairs or their designee will issue a written decision on the grievance no later than 30 days after its filing.
The person filing the grievance may appeal the decision of the Associate Vice President of Student and Alumni Affairs or their designee by writing to the Provost or their designee. The Provost shall issue a written decision in response to the appeal no later than 30 days after its filing.
The availability and use of this grievance procedure does not prevent a person from filing a complaint of discrimination based on disability with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights.
MUIH will make appropriate arrangements to ensure that persons with disabilities are provided other accommodations, if needed, to participate in this grievance process. Such arrangements may include, but are not limited to, providing interpreters for the deaf, providing notetaking, or assuring a barrier-free location for the proceedings. The Associate Vice President of Student and Alumni Affairs will be responsible for such arrangements.

As a student with disabilities, it is important to thoroughly understand your federal, state, and local rights. Exploring the resources available to you on campus can make the transition to college much easier. If you qualify for academic adjustments, speak to an admissions adviser early on so you can receive services and/or assistive technology when classes begin. Many colleges employ ADA or disability rights coordinators and disability services staff who can serve as on-campus resources for your needs.
