The Maryland University of Integrative Health is fully committed to creating an inclusive learning community and ensuring an accessible education for students. The Office of Accessibility ensures that students with medical conditions protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are provided accommodations in a timely manner. Accommodations ensure that students can access course materials and meet learning objectives by removing barriers to education.
In determining a student’s disability status, the Office of Accessibility is guided by the federal definition of “disability” which describes an individual with a disability as someone who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one of more major life activities of such individual, and a record of such impairment or is regarded as having such an impairment. Some types of disabilities include learning, mental health, attentional, sensory, physical, or chronic health.
Your privacy is protected. Accessibility Services maintains an encrypted database to ensure ADA, HIPAA, and FERPA compliance. Students can choose to disclose health conditions to faculty members or classmates, but Accessibility Services staff will not disclose this information.

The ADA defines a person with a disability as a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity. This includes people who have a record of such an impairment, even if they do not currently have a disability. It also includes individuals who do not have a disability but are regarded as having a disability. Our Office determines accommodations for students with a broad range of disabilities. Students may also have intersecting marginalized identities, that impact their experiences, and many of the students who are affiliated with OAS have multiple disabilities. Manal is a disability services professional who has over ten years of experience working with diverse higher education student populations with disabilities. She published “ADHD in Higher Education Programs” for Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) Magazine and presented at the National Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) Conference last year regarding the creation of equitable accommodation policies. Manal serves on the Maryland chapter of AHEAD as Treasurer of the board of executives.
As the Director of Accessibility Services, Manal ensures that students with disabilities receive reasonable accommodations in their classes. As a student advocate, Manal acts as a liaison to connect students to appropriate resources as concerns are raised.
