Mission

Academic Advisors at MUIH work collaboratively with students as they pursue their academic and professional goals. Students and advisors discuss academic progress, set goals, explore challenges, and develop plans for success in an empowering and supportive environment. Advising is a shared responsibility between advisors and students; however, the ultimate responsibility for successful degree completion rests with the student.

Outcomes

Caressa Olivo

Associate Director of Academic Advising

With over 15 years of experience in academic advising, and over 10 years in academic advising administration, Caressa has dedicated her career to a whole-student, relationship-centered approach to academic advising.

She challenges her students to understand their personal power and agency, while supporting them in the challenges they encounter on their educational journey. In her role as Associate Director of Academic Advising at MUIH, she provides support and direction to the academic advising team, and provides academic advising for students in the Health Promotion, Health and Wellness Coaching, and Integrative Health Studies programs. Prior to her current role, Caressa served as Lead Academic Advisor in Biobehavioral Health at Penn State University, Associate Director of Academic Advising at Penn State University – Scranton, Learning Commons Coordinator at Mt. Aloysius College, and Academic Advisor and NSO Coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh – Johnstown.

Matt Mazick

Senior Academic Advisor & New Student Support Specialist

Matt Mazick finds purpose in his service to others.

As an Academic Advisor since 2018, his work in the field of advising at Maryland University of Integrative Health blends his love for advocacy, education, and health by seeking to equip his advisees with tools for a stronger, more successful academic journey. His love for education and service to others has grown over the years. Matt has spent over 7 years working in both K-12 and higher education arenas. That experience began as a Residential Advisor for the Civic Engagement Residence Hall on his undergraduate campus. He later volunteered as an English teacher in South Korea and branched to teaching middle school English in Eastern North Carolina through the national organization, Teach for America. He continues to look forward to the support he can bring to current and future students. Matt holds a Bachelor of Journalism with a concentration in Strategic Communication from the Missouri School of Journalism. In 2020, he graduated with honors from the Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling program at Johns Hopkins University. Matt advises primarily for the Ayurveda, Herbal Medicine, and Yoga Therapy programs.

Laura Steck

Academic and Career Advisor

Laura has always found passion in helping others achieve their goals.

She began her professional journey working in mental health and with children and adults with disabilities. Looking to follow her love for education, she transitioned in 2015 out of the mental health field and took a position within Johns Hopkins University’s School for Advanced International Studies as a Program Coordinator. Although she worked primarily with faculty, she quickly realized that she enjoyed conversing with students as they came into her office to discuss upcoming tests, graduations and other life events. From there, she transitioned to the role of Admissions Counselor for University of Maryland University College (now University of Maryland Global Campus). In the summer of 2018, Laura joined Maryland University of Integrative Health as an Admissions Counselor. She knew that she wanted to work with students on more of a long-term basis throughout their student experience, and in spring of 2019 she became an Academic and Career Advisor. Laura advises primarily for the Nutrition programs. Advising has been the perfect vehicle for Laura to provide the advocacy, resources and support that students need. Her greatest joy in this role is watching students grow during their time in graduate school and seeing them overcome obstacles to reach their professional dreams. Laura is very proud to be a part of MUIH and its mission to promote healing through integrative health education.

Academic and Career Advisor

Casey is a dedicated student affairs professional with 3 years of advising experience.

She made the transition to higher education after 5 years in the behavioral/ mental health field. With a background in counseling, Casey takes a solution focused, student centered approach towards advising. She focuses on student success through data driven approaches. One of the highlights of her job is seeing students graduate and pursue their dreams within the integrative health field. Casey advises primarily for the Nutrition programs.

Chelsey Barrett

Academic and Career Advisor and Student Support Specialist

Chelsey began working in higher education over 10 years ago when she joined the student life team at Howard Community College.

From there, she served as the Event Coordinator at Stevenson University. Chelsey joined Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) in 2015, as the Program Administrator for the Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine department. In 2018, Chelsey became an Academic and Career Advisor and Student Support Specialist for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. Being an advisor provides a space to blend her passion for supporting a quality education experience for students and the promotion of integrative medicine with a focus on healing presence. While working at MUIH, Chelsey completed the Master of Science in Health Promotion program and became a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) in May 2019. Being an alumna of MUIH has created an understanding of the student experience at MUIH, which in turn helps to provide better support and advocacy for the student population. Chelsey believes in providing a safe space for her students that allows for empowerment and collaboration. The greatest joy for Chelsey is celebrating her students’ graduation and watching them share their healing modality with the world. MUIH students support a shift in the world to whole-person and community health and wellness through relationship centered integrative health education, care and leadership and that is something Chelsey is proud to be part of.
