Return of Title IV Funds

If a student withdraws, drops out, is dismissed, or takes a voluntary break in enrollment before completing more than 60 percent of a trimester or period of enrollment, MUIH is required to return of Title IV funds disbursed and not yet earned by the student to the lender must be as soon as possible but no later than 45 days after the determining the student has withdrawn or effective date of the student’s termination of enrollment.

The amount to be returned will be calculated as follows:

Percentage of earned aid = Number of days completed up to the withdrawal date

Total days in the payment period or term.

Any break of five days or more is not counted as part of the days in the term.

Funds to be returned = (Aid that could not be disbursed – Percentage of earned aid) x Total amount of aid that could have been disbursed during the payment period or term

Funds will be returned to the lender in the following order:

  • Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans
  • Federal Graduate (PLUS) Loans

After the return of Title IV funds calculation has occurred, the Financial Aid office will notify the student of the results, the aid that has been returned, and any balance remaining on the student’s account will be promptly due to MUIH. Post-Withdrawal In the event that the student did not receive all the funds that were earned prior to withdrawing, a post-withdrawal disbursement may be due.  If the post-withdrawal includes loan funds, the student must give permission before the funds can be disbursed allowing at least 14 days to respond to accept or decline the funds.  MUIH may automatically use all or a portion of the post-withdrawal disbursement of grant funds for tuition, fees, and room, and board charges.  Permission is required to use the post-withdrawal grant disbursement within 45 days for all charges, allowing at least 14 days to respond to accept or decline the funds.  Students will be notified of their eligibility for post-withdrawal disbursement eligibility within 30 days of the date of withdrawal determination. The school must return the Title IV funds within 45 days of when the date the school determines the student withdrew.  A credit balance that occurs as a result of a post-withdrawal disbursement will be refunded to the student as soon as possible but no later than 14 days after the credit balance occurs on the student account.
