Laurel, Md. – Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) announced today that it has expanded its community outreach partnership with A Wider Circle to support the 2021 Virtual Race to End Poverty.

A Wider Circle’s annual Race to End Poverty, which will take a virtual format for the second year in a row, runs from April 3 to May 1.

“MUIH is pleased to support the Race to End Poverty and other activities of A Wider Circle. We are grateful for this partnership and the opportunities it provides for MUIH students to engage with the community and apply their learning. This is part of our mission – supporting our community in learning the great benefits of whole foods, easy cooking techniques, and other resilience practices to strive and flourish. Together, students and community members learn the value of these approaches in creating healthy and resilient communities,” said Eleonora Gafton, Assistant Professor of Nutrition and Cooking Lab Director.

The mission of A Wider Circle is to end poverty. Its holistic approach integrates on-the-ground services for the creation of stable homes, workforce development, and neighborhood revitalization. It also seeks to develop large-scale solutions that incorporate greater awareness and engagement by the community. With its Center for Community Service based in Silver Spring, Maryland, A Wider Circle’s personalized approach treats every one of its neighbors with respect and dignity. Since 2001, A Wider Circle has provided vital services to more than 260,000 children and adults. A corps of 30,000 annual volunteers help 30,000 people in need each year.

“Supporting a Wider Circle and other community-based organizations is an important and growing component of MUIH,” said Marc Levin, President, and CEO.

MUIH also supports A Wider Circle’s mission on an ongoing basis. Students in MUIH’s M.S. Nutrition and Integrative Health program design and implement monthly nutritional literacy curriculum including cooking demonstrations, nutrition and wellness workshops, and recipe creation.

MUIH also supports A Wider Circle’s Partnership 2 Independence program, a five-year intensive program aimed at supporting local families to bring themselves off public assistance.
